We’re pleased to launch the FREE Global Giga Projects Seminar Series, jointly organized by PMI and RMIT University. Join us for the inaugural seminar, “Leading Through Complexity: What Makes Giga Projects Different to Deliver?”—a dynamic dialogue exploring why giga projects demand more than traditional approaches to planning and control.
Giga projects are complex, transformative and years-long initiatives, often exceeding US$1 billion. They reshape economies and communities and must be delivered under conditions of extreme complexity, uncertainty, political visibility and rapid change. But scale alone is not what makes them different. Complexity arises when tasks, stakeholders, technologies and external influences interact in dynamic and often unpredictable ways. PMI’s latest research finds that 81% of project professionals believe projects have become more complex in recent years, while almost one-third of complex projects fail to achieve the full scope of their intended benefits.
At giga scale, delivery depends on a dense network of contractors, suppliers, designers, public bodies and other stakeholders working across organizational, cultural and national boundaries. What determines whether these projects overcome their challenges is rarely ambition or intent alone. It is whether this delivery ecosystem can work as one toward a shared purpose. Relationship management is therefore not a soft skill at the margins of delivery, but a core delivery discipline. Yet relationship health often remains invisible, unmanaged and unmeasured, while cost, schedule and technical risk are governed with rigor.
Drawing on real stories and lived experiences from experts, as well as the latest research—including PMI’s Pulse of the Profession 2026 and Designed to Deliver reports—this inaugural seminar will explore what complexity means in practice and why traditional delivery models struggle at giga scale.
