Special Seminar: Managing Projects and Arbitration with AI: Benefit & Risk in the Age of Automation
This seminar explores how artificial intelligence is transforming engineering and IT projects and arbitration. It will discuss the practical benefits of AI, including improved efficiency, better project planning, and support in contract management, claims, and dispute resolution. At the same time, it will highlight the key risks, such as errors, lack of transparency, data concerns, and over-reliance on automated tools. Through practical examples, the seminar aims to help participants better understand how AI can be used responsibly and effectively while maintaining professional judgment, legal compliance, and proper human oversight in an increasingly automated environment.

In addition to his practice as a barrister, Prof. To is the Programme Director of the Master of Laws in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution at the City University of Hong Kong. He is also an independent mediator, adjudicator and arbitrator who serves on the panels of various leading global alternative dispute resolution bodies. He has arbitrated a variety of international cases involving both ad hoc and institutional arbitrations; mediated and adjudicated many international and domestic cases and has represented clients as Counsel in cases at the Magistrate, District and High Courts, the Commission of Inquiry, disciplinary proceedings as well as in international arbitrations and mediations. He is an accredited mediator, accredited adjudicator, chartered arbitrator, chartered engineer, chartered information technology professional and a barrister-at-law. As the former Secretary-General of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, Prof. To managed to elevate Hong Kong’s status as the regional dispute resolution hub of Asia as well as establishing the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre, a body that has gained international prominence within the dot.com community as a reliable and reputable entity that manages domain name disputes.

Kwan Yuen is a Barrister-at-Law and an MPhil student at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. He served as a Contract Marshal in the High Court for one year, and as a Judge Marshal in the Court of Appeal and the District Court for about three months. He has a genuine enthusiasm for the law and a strong interest in legal research, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Law. His legal research has received more than 140 citations, according to Google Scholar. He also serves as a member of the Digital Transformation Committee at SideBySide.
