Synopsis
Do you want to learn the basics of contract law? Apart from being responsible for managing delivery of a Project, do you read or deal with contracts in your role as a Project Manager? Are you in doubt of the exact meaning of some of the words in the contracts ? Are you worried about your understanding of a binding contract, and the extent of your liability under a contract? Today, knowledge is power and what can be more powerful than understanding the law of contracts! The course offers a practical introduction to contract law and IPR in the context of project management.

Course Objectives

The dangers of “small prints” are well known to all project managers, but the understanding of the precise legal ramifications of a contract can make the difference between success and failure. This course is to teach you what to look for in a contract in order for you to make an informed decision, taking all potential risks and benefits into account. The understanding gained from this course will reduce the chances of a contract disputes occurring, though it is impossible to account for other parties involved.

Instructor’s Profile – Miss Winifred Lo
Winifred Lo was admitted as a solicitor of Hong Kong in 1998 and specialized in commercial litigation and intellectual property law before she joined PCCW Group in 2002. Winifred has been working with various internal business units in PCCW Group throughout the years and has exposure in various business areas, including Consumer business, IT Outsourcing and System Integration, Software Licensing, Media Content and Music Licensing and IP Exploitation. Winifred has extensive experience in drafting, negotiating and enforcing contracts and has solid “battle-field” experience to share.

Effective Conflict Management Workshop
Synopsis

Many people encounter different conflict situations in their roles as functional or project managers (e.g. meeting aggressive deadlines, budgets and targets; in situations of ambiguous role/matrix organization, encountering conflict of interest – personal, technical and managerial). Without a holistic view and systematic approach towards conflict management, many project managers will end up sacrificing the short and/or long term benefits of various concerned parties, including performance, productivity and relationship.

Course Objectives
In this program, participants can build awareness, learning, practicing and sharing with others the key drivers leading to effective conflict management. It helps you to understand that a solution usually lie with you and not with the person whom you are dealing with. Changing one’s behaviour, such as what to do, what to say and how to say it, will create changes. You may not always get what you want but you will learn how to drive what happens, and even getting to the core of the problem. The learning will be acquired mainly through exercises, cases and reflections.
Upon completion of the course, attendants will be able to understand the following:
• Why conflict occurs? Understand the consciousness, perception, emotion and reasoning functions of our brain. Appreciate how the Reward and Execution Center of our brain guide the thought process, communication pattern, behaviour, planning and decision making during conflict situations.
• Why do we have a preferred style and approach towards conflict management: Learn the 5 techniques described in PMBOK.
• What is the holistic view of effective conflict management? Understand and apply the underlying principles and steps to surface assumptions/issues and bring out the best options, trade-off, agreement and performance.
• What sort of conflict management skills and behaviors are required by a project manager? Brief introduction of the “Consequence” template and the aggressive, expressive and receptive influence techniques

Instructors’ Profile – Mr. Andy Tsui & Ms. Irene Yiu

Andy Tsui has over 30 years of senior executive and professional experience in the high-tech industry. As a Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers with an MBA, Andy was the Director of Training and Development of a large corporation in Hong Kong. During which, he led numerous training and development programs related to project management and leadership / managerial development.

Andy is a Fellow member of the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management (iHRM). He served the Executive Council of the Institute from 2001 to 2008 and was the Vice Chairman of the Institute from 2005 to 2007. Andy is at present the Vice Chairman of the Training and Development Committee of the Institute and also the Committee Member of the Human Resources Development (HRD) Management Committee of the Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA).

Irene Yiu has over 15 years of experience in the Training & Development field. Irene was the Head of Business and Management Training of a large corporation in HK. She successfully designed and implemented many training and development programs, helping professionals and managers in the IT, Engineering, Sales and Marketing field to uplift their competence, especially on Negotiation, Leadership, and Interpersonal skills.

Apart from the experience in the IT&T industry, Irene also worked in the Public Sector as a Training Manager to provide consultancy services and training programs to various Government Departments, in the areas of Change Management, Customer Service, Presentation and Stress Management.

Irene holds a Master degree in Training & Human Resources Management. She is also a guest speaker of the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management (iHRM) on People Management and Training and Development Management.

People Management Workshop
Synopsis
Project Manager always plays a role as People Manager. This one-day workshop is designed to help managers to make the transition from an Individual Contributor to a Project Manager bearing people responsibilities. It is based on extensive interviews with new managers and their managers to analyze what knowledge and skills are most critical. The philosophy is built around the management cycle of Defining Direction, Mobilizing the Team, Assess and Reward Performance.

Course Objectives
This is a one day course which aims at providing a roadmap to support new managers in the first 6 to 12 months in their new role (project manager or leader) and also to refresh the memories of seasoned managers on some key points. The workshop helps to prepare managers to conduct their own Team Building activities. It utilizes communications with the managers, peer coaching and class exercises. A successful Project Manager must effectively manage the resources assigned to the project. This includes the labor hours of the project employees, subcontractors, vendors and partners. Managing the people resources means having the right people, with the right skills and the proper tools, in the right quantity at the right time. It also means ensuring that they know what needs to be done, when and how. It also means motivating them to take ownership in the project too.

Instructor’s Profile – Mr. Alex Sin
Alex Sin is an independent consultant with more than 24 years of IT experience with expertise in Consulting, Project Management and Training. While at Hewlett-Packard HK SAR Limited in the previous 10 years, Alex Sin was the Learning and Development Manager and a certified instructor in a number of training including Negotiation, Consulting and Management Development. Alex is certified as a ITIL/ITSM Manager, well equipped with Methodology to deliver IT Consulting. He is also a practitioner of PDI, MBTI and DISC well-known consulting tools.

Alex enriched his Project Management experience from large scaled projects like Libraries, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and Companies Registry. Alex shifted his role to business manager in 1995 and was dual-hatted as the Outsourcing Manager in charge of Home PC Call Centre. Since Y2K, he dedicated himself to Learning and Development and developed a number of professionals in the Greater China.

Alex is a certified PMBOK trainer from Project Management Institute (PMI) Hong Kong Chapter. He was the Vice President of Membership and Recruitment at Project Management Institute Hong Kong Chapter during 2003-2008. Alex graduated from The University of Toronto with major in Computer Sciences and Mathematics.
