PMIHK Joint-Club Christmas Party
- reported by Miss Jenny Tsang, member of the PMIHK Engineers’ Club
The PMIHK Christmas Party jointly organized by the Engineers’ Club, Young PM Club, IT Club and PMO Club was successfully held on 18 December 2009. The theme of the Party was “Masquerade”. Close to sixty Club members attended our Party and enjoyed a wonderful evening in the festive season. In that evening, every participant was required to wear a masquerade provided by the organizing committee and some participants even brought their own masquerades which helped to enhance the mysterious atmosphere of the Party.
The Party commenced with the opening speech by Mr Raymond Wong, President of PMI Hong Kong Chapter. He said that it was the first time he joined the Party held by the Clubs of the PMIHK and he took the opportunity to thank the members for their continuous support throughout the year and wished everyone a fruitful year to come. Following the opening speech by the President, Ir Alex Leung - Chairman of the Engineers’ Club, Mr Thomas Wai – Chairman of Young PM Club, Ms Christine Yau – Chairperson of IT Club, and Mr Anthony Lung – Chairman of PMO Club delivered remarks for the event.
All the participants enjoyed the dinner buffet, games as well as chances to make new friends and talk with different Club members. The most exciting part of the Party should be the live musical performance of a local band: CharCoal. CharCoal performed a number of songs with pop style as well as Christmas rhythm. All the participants enjoyed the musical performance very much and felt really excited.
Of course dancing was one of the most critical and enjoyable elements of the Party. The festive evening was concluded with dancing by all the participants including the President and the Chairpersons of four clubs. That was a wonderful night and we would like to express our appreciation to all the participants and members of the organizing committee for their support to this event. We look forward to seeing you in our next Christmas Party in 2010!

Engineers’ Club – Project Management Seminar Series
“Design Management of MTR Railway Projects”
- reported by Miss Vincci Shek, member of the PMIHK Engineers’ Club
The first seminar of the Project Management (PM) Seminar Series jointly organized by the Project Management Institute – Hong Kong Chapter (PMIHK), the Project Management Specialist Group (PMG) and the Young Members Committee (YMC) of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) was held on 18 May 2009. We were delighted to have Ir Jason Wong, the Design Manager of Shatin to Central Link of MTR Corporation Limited, as the seminar speaker. We have had a full house of 100 attendees with a good mixture of them from different disciplines, including project managers and the engineering professionals, and also from different age groups.
Following a keynote remark by Mr Anthony Lung - Vice President of the PMIHK, Ir Alex Leung - Chairman of the PMIHK Engineers’ Club and Deputy Chairman of the HKIE Project Management Specialist Group delivered an opening speech for the event. The topic of our first PM seminar was “Design Management of MTR Railway Projects”. Our speaker Ir Wong has developed his career as a railway civil engineer for 20 years and has participated in the planning and design of various railway projects in Hong Kong.
The seminar provided an introduction on design management of MTR railway projects. The essence and overview of the pro-activeness, collaboration, multi-disciplinary focus and early input on constructability to projects were elaborated. Ir Wong gave the audience an insight on the project lifecycle of Design Management ranging from Feasibility Study, Preliminary Design, Detailed Design, to Construction and Commissioning. He also explained the roles and responsibilities of a Design Manager in different stages and phases of a project. Ir Wong shared his experience on projects and emphasized on the importance of good design management for a project. The rationale of MTR Corporation's practice of completely defining client's requirements prior to commencement of detailed design, working in the same office with design consultants, focusing on interface management, value engineering and peer review was discussed in the seminar.
The interactive Q & A session was also encouraging and there was a very good interaction with the audience. The participants gave positive feedback on the seminar and they appreciated the interactive communication with the speaker during the seminar. The seminar has achieved the goal and objectives initiated by the PMIHK Engineers’ Club. On behalf of the organizers, Ir Alex Leung proposed a vote of thanks and presented a souvenir to Ir Jason Wong at the end of the seminar.
The second seminar of the PM Seminar Series will be held on 30 June 2009 and please take prompt action in registration for the event. We look forward to seeing you in our second PM seminar.
